Primary 1

Writing

By the end of P1 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Recognise initial, final and medial vowel sound

 

  • Spell three letter words

 

  • Form letters and space words legibly

 

  • Show awareness of capital letters, full stops and rhyme

 

  • Draw detailed pictures with matching scribed stories with appropriate language

 

  • Have an awareness of relevant order of events, beginning middle and end

 

  • Write own name

 

  • Identify speech bubble

 

Reading

By the end of P1 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Share a pictorial text with teacher and group

 

  • Understand use of terms such as title, author, illustrator, blurb, logo, character

 

  • Know both the name and sound of the letters of the alphabet

 

  • Use phonological awareness to help read words

 

  • Have a basic sight vocabulary

 

  • Show awareness of rhyme and rhythm

 

  • Understand and can use work, letter, full stop

Primary 2

Writing

By the end of P2 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Write Briefly a functional piece of writing eg a postcard, a letter

 

  • A personal piece of writing eg a diary

 

  • An imaginative piece of writing eg a fairly tale

 

  • In the above begin to use capital letters and full stops in at least one sentence

 

  • In the above begin to use linking words

 

  • Can use word bank, personal dictionary to support writing and can spell commonly used words

 

  • Can form letters and space words legibly

 

  • Can use and understand terms:- capital letter full stop, sentence and rhyme

 

  • Can indicate speech within a bubble

 

Reading

By the end of P2 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Locate and use information from simple reference books

 

  • Select different styles of books from the classroom library to read for enjoyment

 

  • Use and learn phonic skills to decode

 

  • Read a familiar text with fluency

 

  • Recognise differences between fiction and non-fiction

 

  • Know the term illustrator, author, title, contents, chapter and index

Primary 3

Writing

By the end of P3 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Produce extended pieces of personal, imaginative and functional writing with sufficient detail to make clear and logical

 

  • Use common linking words appropriately

 

  • Use capital letter and full stop correctly in more than one sentence

 

  • Form letters correctly and write legibly in linked script

 

  • Use and understand terms:- noun, doing word, describing word vowel, consonant, singular, plural, planning, drafting, plot, setting and character

 

  • Use speech bubbles to indicate a character's speech

 

  • Recognise consonant blends, vowel digraphs

 

  • Spell frequently used words accurately

 

  • Use personal/simple dictionary

 

Reading

By the end of P3 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Decode most words presented

 

  • Read with fluency

 

  • Read a wide range of materials

 

  • Identify main ideas and locate specific details within a text

 

  • Use an index/contents page to locate information

 

  • Read independently for pleasure

 

  • Have views about a text and be able to discuss their personal response with others

 

  • Recognise the terms dictionary, poem, setting the scene, text, question mark

Primary 4

Writing

By the end of P4 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Write in an appropriate form for a variety of purposes

 

  • Write in a logically organised way

 

  • Use capital letter and full stop correctly in more than one sentence and use common linking words in personal, imaginative and functional writing

 

  • Spell correctly frequently used words through using a simple wordbook and dictionary and thesaurus

 

  • Use and understand terms:- noun, adjective, verb, adverb, comma, question mark, singular and plural

 

  • Make an attempt to use paragraphs

 

  • Edit work using correction code

 

Reading

By the end of P4 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Read stories, poems and information texts regularly for pleasure, developing understanding and specific information

 

  • Read a familiar text with fluency

 

  • Read straight forward texts and in discussion and writing show that they understand the main ideas and supporting details

 

  • Recognise the terms fiction and non-fiction, plot, reference, main ideas, character, verse, speech marks and exclamation marks

Primary 5

Writing

By the end of P5 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Write a simple report communicating key facts

 

  • Write a letter for a specific purpose

 

  • Write a story/poem

 

  • In all the above, use appropriate vocabulary and structure and can adapt style to suit purpose and audience

 

  • Use paragraphs on story writing with most sentence punctuated accurately

 

  • Know how to record direct speech

 

  • Use and frequently spell words with accuracy

 

  • Make good use of the dictionary and thesaurus

 

  • Adopt a legible script

 

  • Understand parts of speech eg noun, adjective, verb, adverb, apostrophe, conjunction and collective noun

 

  • Uses and understands functional, personal and imaginative writing

 

Reading

By the end of P5 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Extract specific information from a variety of texts

 

  • Read for enjoyment

 

  • Talk about main and supporting ideas

 

  • Draw conclusions

 

  • Differentiate between styles of text eg comics, newspapers

 

  • Read unfamiliar text with understanding

 

  • Be aware of skimming and scanning as a method of extractive information

 

  • Use appropriate language when talking about reading materials

 

  • Begin to understand and respond to texts beyond the literal level, ie, at inferential and evaluate levels

 

  • Recognise terms dialogue, conflict

 

  • Presentation of text, layout, bold, italic

Primary 6

Writing

By the end of P6 most children at this stage should be able to :-

 

  • Write in a variety of forms to communicate key facts, events or ideas using appropriate organisation and vocabulary

 

  • Punctuate many sentences accurately, including use of commas and question marks.  Develop use of paragraphs and a variety of sentence structures when writing

 

  • Can indicate direct speech in appropriate ways

 

  • Use fluent style of handwriting and continue to increase vocabulary and spell unfamiliar words accurately

 

  • Have a greater awareness and show understanding of the following terms:-

Masculine, feminine, paragraph, first, second and third person, past and present tenses

 

Reading

By the end of P6 most children at this stage should be able to:-

 

  • Read a variety to texts and via discussion and writing show an understanding of the main ideas or feelings and that they can obtain particular information

 

  • Read for enjoyment a range of subject matter and with some support reflect on what has been read and record personal reactions using book reports, diary extracts etc

 

  • Identify features and content in different types of texts; stories, poems, dramatic texts, newspapers, informational and reference texts

 

  • Develop further skills at the level of inferential and evaluative comprehension

 

  • Recognise terms genre, theme, dialect, fact, opinion and motive, relationships, setting

Writing

By the end of P7 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Write logically in an appropriate structure

 

  • Demonstrate a sustained sense of personal or emotional involvement

 

  • Write in paragraphs with most sentences punctuated correctly

 

  • Use a range of writing styles to convey information appropriately

 

  • Develop character, plot, atmosphere and description in a text

 

  • Spell most words correctly with use of a variety of dictionaries and thesaurus

 

  • Report accurately in a number of appropriate formats

 

  • Handwriting is fluent, legible and consistent

 

  • Use a word processor to prepare texts with a layout which is clear and attractive

 

  • Have an awareness of audience and appropriateness

 

  • Have  awareness of and show understanding of terms:-

 

                      quotation mark, genre, prefix, suffix ,autobiography, biography, apostrophe and pronoun

 

Reading

By the end of P7 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Sustain independent reading

 

  • Recognise and understand genre

 

  • Locate and use information from a variety of sources to develop ideas and communicate understanding

 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of texts at inferential and evaluative levels

 

  • Select a variety of texts to read for pleasure

 

  • Recognise bias in texts

 

  • Use reading as a means of exploring their environment and gaining a better understanding of themselves

 

  • Understanding the use of genre and recognise the terms symbol, prefix and suffix
