Primary 1

By the end of Primary 1 most children at this stage should be able to: -

  

  • Sort, match and sequence by colour, type and size

 

  • Count and write numerals to 10

 

  • Add and subtract to 10

 

  • Recognise 2D and 3D common shapes

 

  • Understand and use the language of length, weight and time

 

  • Begin to collect, organise, display and interpret information

Primary 2

By the end of Primary 2 most children at this stage should be able to: -

  

  • Add and subtract within 20

 

  • Work with numbers to 100

 

  • Recognise and use coins up to 50p

 

  • Measure length, weight, volume and area in non-standard units

 

  • Read o'clock and half past in both analogue and digital

 

  • Order days of the week and months of the year

 

  • Recognise and name some simple 2D and 3D shapes

 

  • Collect, organise, display and interpret information

Primary 3

By the end of Primary 3 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Add and subtract 2 digit numbers

 

  • Understand the concept of multiplication

 

  • Understand the concept of weight, length, volume and area

 

  • Tell the time using o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to on both digital and analogue clock

 

  • Money, use coins up to £1

 

  • Collect, organise, display and interpret information from tables and charts

 

  • Collect, discuss and make and name 2D and 3D shapes

Primary 4

By the end of Primary 4 most children at this stage should be able to: -

  

  • Count, order, read and write whole numbers up to 1000

 

  • Add and subtract 3 digit numbers without a calculator

 

  • Multiply and divide mentally by 2 - 5 and 10 tables

 

  • Multiply without a calculator, 2 digit numbers by 2 - 5 and 10

 

  • Apply knowledge of +, -, x, ÷ to problem solving activities

 

  • Measure in standard units and fractions of these

 

  • Identify shapes by features such as faces, edges, sides and angles in 2 and 3D shapes

 

  • Recognise and use the 4 compass points, use grid references, understand instructions for turning through right angles

 

  • Collect, organise, display and interpret basic information using tables, charts and diagrams

By the end of Primary 5 most children at this stage should be able to: -

  

  • Read and order 5 digit numbers

 

  • Using 3 digits +, -, x, ÷  within 9999

 

  • Know and use simple fractions eg ¼, ¯

 

  • Recognise decimals within the money context

 

  • Be aware of standard units of measure

 

  • Be able to identify 3D shapes

 

  • Be aware of line symmetry

 

  • Know straight, acute and obtuse angles

 

  • Use tally marks to construct and interpret graphs

 

  • Collect, organise, display and interpret basic information using tables, bar charts, displays and data bases

Primary 6

By the end of Primary 6 most children at this stage should be able to:-

  

  • Understand the concept of place value and be able to read and write numbers up to one million

 

  • Add and subtract using thousands, hundreds, tens and units by 2-9

 

  • Use decimals to 2 decimal places

 

  • Work with fractions involving hundredths, equivalent fractions, simplification and mixed numbers

 

  • Work with both 12 and 24 hour clock

 

  • Use standard units with increased accuracy when measuring length, weight volume, area and temperature

 

  • Increase problem solving skills by being able to identify problems, choose materials, use suitable strategies, report conclusions and results

 

  • Collect make and use 2D and 3D shapes

 

  • Collect organise, display and interpret information from a wide range of tables, graphs and databases

By the end of Primary 7 most children at this stage should be able to: -

 

  • Add, subtract, multiply and dived whole numbers to 4 digits

 

  • Read and understand 6 digit numbers

 

  • Use accurately the multiplication and division tables 2-10 to 4 digits

 

  • Apply measurements concerning volume, area, shape, weight, time, length etc

 

  • Select appropriate mathematical operations to solve problems

 

  • Work with fractions, percentages and decimals

 

  • Collect, make and discuss 2 and 3D shapes

 

  • Collect, organise, display and interpret information from bar line, frequency and pie charts. Use a range of displays and databases.
